Title: Intermittency and collisions in turbulence

Speaker: Dr. Itzhak Fouxon (Ben Gurion University, Israel)

Abstract: Prediction of rain demands knowledge of how small droplets in clouds, whose motion is driven by air turbulence, grow. The growth is due to collisions and merging with other droplets. Today we understand quite well the collisions at moderate Reynolds numbers where intermittency (burst-like behavior) of turbulence is weak. However, the Reynolds number in clouds is high and intermittency there is strong. The number of degrees of freedom of the cloud turbulence is well beyond the reach of modern computer simulations. At the same time, the progress is quite necessary since current predictions of rain times are often wrong by an order of magnitude. In this talk, we will consider how by a combination of theory and numerical work we can assess how strongly intermittency influences the droplets' collisions in clouds.
